Science Magazine Encourages Teaching/Research Balance

I found this interesting.  Science Magazine, in an article written by biologists, encourages the creation of a set of best practices that would allow faculty to pay as much attention to their teaching as they do their research (link here).  From the press release:

[t]o establish an academic culture that encourages science faculty to be equally committed to their teaching and research missions, universities must more broadly and effectively recognize, reward, and support the efforts of researchers who are also excellent and dedicated teachers

This is a conversation that needs to be had in most disciplines and especially for the future of performance evaluation.  Most institutions require the perfunctory student evaluations and a handful of peer evaluations but provide little training to those giving the feedback.  What results are job review tools that are inconsistently used, provide little depth to the evaluation and are frequently ignored for future improvement.
